The goddess in a palki
Bankura's terracotta tradition is best known through the long-necked Bankura horse and the 17th-century temples of Bishnupur, whose walls are covered in carved clay panels. Kumbhakar potters in Panchmura and nearby villages still work the local red clay into horses, murals, drinkware and everyday pots. The Bankura Panchmura terracotta craft carries a GI tag.
Local clay is cleaned, kneaded and thrown on the wheel or pressed and modelled by hand, with separate parts joined while still soft. After slow drying in the shade the pieces are fired in a wood kiln. Painted pieces are decorated by hand with folk motifs after firing.
Rinse drinkware with plain water and a soft brush; avoid soap, which the porous clay can absorb. Soak new bottles and cups in water for a few hours before first use. Dust decorative pieces with a dry cloth.
Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
