About this piece

The square pakha

Alpana is the ritual floor art of Bengal, traditionally drawn by women with rice paste on festival and wedding days. Its flowing kolka (paisley), lotus, conch and creeper motifs call in Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity. We bring these motifs onto wedding kulos, hand fans (haath pakha) and wooden boxes that can be kept and used every day.

The bamboo or wooden base is primed and painted in a solid ground colour. The artist then draws the alpana freehand with a fine brush in white and contrast colours, building the lotus, kolka and dotted borders by hand before sealing the surface with a clear coat.

Wipe gently with a dry, soft cloth. Keep away from water and prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colours.

Made to order in 1–2 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
