A procession elephant
Sholapith, often called Indian cork, is the milky-white spongy core of a marsh plant (Aeschynomene aspera) that grows in the wetlands of Bengal. The Malakar community has carved it for centuries into the decorations for Durga Puja idols, bridal crowns (topor) and fine showpieces. Bengal Sholapith carries a GI tag.
The dried stem is peeled and its soft core is cut into thin sheets with a razor-sharp knife. Sheets are folded, curled, pleated and pinned into flowers, feathers and figures, then assembled piece by piece. Finished works are mounted inside glass or acrylic cases to keep them clean.
Sholapith is light and delicate. Keep the piece in its case, away from moisture and direct sun, and wipe only the outside of the glass.
Made to order in 3–4 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
