The dance of the Santhal village
Arms linked, the Santhal women dance in long rows to the tamak and tumdak drums, as they do at Sohrai and Baha, the harvest and flower festivals. Santhal Patachitra is drawn in a simpler, earthier style than Medinipur’s bright scrolls — large-eyed figures, little background, and a muted palette of ochre and brown.
The patua grinds the colours by hand — turmeric yellow, lamp black, clay reds and leaf greens — and binds them with the gum of the bel fruit. The scenes are drawn freehand, filled in flat colour and finished with bold black outlines. Each painting is one of a kind; small differences from the photograph are the mark of the hand.
Hang indoors away from damp and direct sunlight, which fade natural pigments. Dust the frame and glass with a dry soft cloth; never spray cleaner directly onto the glass.
Framed pieces are corner-guarded and boxed, and ship across India and worldwide. Because each painting is unique, a repeat of the same design is painted to order in 3–4 weeks and will vary slightly.
