The everyday tote
Sabai grass (Eulaliopsis binata) grows wild across the Jangalmahal belt of Jhargram and neighbouring Mayurbhanj. For tribal and rural women here, twisting and weaving this tough, golden grass into baskets, trays and bags is a steady source of income and a skill passed from mother to daughter.
The grass is harvested, sun-dried and dyed in natural and bright colours. It is then twisted into rope or coiled into bundles and stitched round and round by hand into baskets, trays and bags, with patterns built up colour by colour as the piece grows.
Wipe with a dry cloth or brush out dust. If the grass gets wet, dry it in the shade. Avoid long exposure to damp, which can cause spotting.
Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
