About this piece

Patachitra, off the scroll

The patuas of Naya in Paschim Medinipur have painted long story-scrolls for generations. Today they carry the same bold figures, large almond eyes and black outlines onto everyday objects — kettles, trays and bottles — so a piece of Bengal Patachitra can sit on a shelf or a tea table. On this kettle a woman in a red sari dances to the beat of the dhol, with white sun-petals around the shoulder.

An aluminium kettle is cleaned and primed in a ground colour. The patua then draws the figures freehand with a fine brush, fills them in flat colour and finishes with bold black outlines and white detail. The spout is painted as a bird’s head, and the whole piece is sealed with a clear varnish. Each kettle is painted by hand, so small differences from the photograph are the mark of the hand.

This is a decorative piece — the paint is not food-safe and the kettle should not be heated or filled with hot liquid. Dust with a dry soft cloth and keep away from water and long direct sunlight.

Painted to order in 2–3 weeks, then wrapped and boxed for shipping across India and worldwide.
