About this piece

Sindoor for the new bride

Bengal's kansaris have worked brass and bell metal (kansa) for centuries. Their vessels hold every important moment in a Bengali home, from the bride's sindoor box to the rice-feeding ceremony thali, and are handed down from one generation to the next.

Sheet or cast brass is shaped by hand-beating and lathe turning, then scraped smooth and engraved with chisels and punches in floral and geometric patterns. The piece is buffed by hand to bring out the golden finish.

Wash with mild soap and dry straight away to prevent water marks. Brass darkens naturally with time; a paste of tamarind or lemon with salt brings back the shine. Avoid harsh scrubbers on engraved areas.

Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
