About this piece

The kitchen garden, on a bowl

Bengal’s folk painters have always drawn what they see around them, and here it is the kitchen garden — a round orange pumpkin, a glossy green capsicum and a sprig of cherry tomatoes, tied together by leaves and white curling flourishes. It is a bowl made for the table: salads, fruit, puffed rice or bread.

The bowl is turned from a single piece of seasoned mango wood and sanded smooth. The vegetables are painted freehand in layers of colour, highlighted and outlined, and the white flourishes are added last with a fine brush. The outside is sealed; the inside is left as natural wood. Every bowl is painted by hand, so the picture varies slightly from the photograph.

Wash by hand with mild soap and dry at once with a cloth. Do not soak, leave standing in water or put in a dishwasher or microwave. Rub the inside with a little food-grade oil now and then to keep the wood from drying out.

Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then wrapped, boxed and shipped across India and worldwide.
