Shiva’s gatekeeper, in festival dress
Nandi, the bull, is Shiva’s mount and the gatekeeper of Kailash. In every Shiva temple he sits facing the shrine, and devotees whisper their wishes into his ear. He is a sign of strength, patience and devotion, and a seated Nandi is often kept in the puja room or at the entrance of the home. This one is dressed as bulls are on festival days — garlanded, belled and covered with a flowered cloth.
The figure is carved from a single block of wood, smoothed and primed. The base colour is laid on, then the saddle-cloth, collar and bridle are painted freehand with fine brushes — lotus and leaf sprays, rows of white dots and jewel-coloured roundels — before the piece is sealed with a clear lacquer. Each Nandi is painted by hand, so the pattern and shade vary from piece to piece.
Keep indoors, away from damp and direct sunlight. Dust with a dry soft cloth; do not wash or use cleaning sprays. Lift from the body, not the horns or ears.
Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then wrapped and boxed for shipping across India and worldwide.
