Lakshmi's owl
Dhokra is one of the oldest known metal-casting traditions in the world, dating back more than 4,000 years to the dancing girl of Mohenjo-daro. In Bikna, near Bankura town, Dhokra Karmakar families still cast tribal figures, animals, deities and palanquins by hand. Bengal Dokra carries a GI tag.
A clay core is covered in beeswax threads and shaped into the final design, then coated in layers of clay. When fired, the wax melts away (the "lost wax") and molten brass is poured into the hollow. The mould is broken, so every piece is one of a kind, and is then cleaned and finished by hand.
Dust with a soft dry cloth or brush. The antique, slightly rough finish is part of the craft, so avoid metal polish and water.
Made to order in 3–4 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
