About this piece

A dancer's crown

Purulia Chhau is a martial folk dance of West Bengal, inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its dancers wear large, vivid masks of gods, goddesses and demons made in Charida village, where around 150 Sutradhar families keep the craft alive. Charida's masks carry a GI tag.

Layers of paper soaked in glue are pressed over a clay mould, coated with fine clay and cloth, dried in the sun and removed. The mask is smoothed, painted by hand and crowned with a headdress of beads, sequins, zari and pith. A mask takes two to seven days depending on its detail.

Hang indoors away from moisture and direct sunlight. Dust the headdress gently with a soft brush; do not wipe with a wet cloth.

Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
