About this piece
The mandala at the threshold
Each roundel is carved in wood and picked out in white, with concentric rings of triangles, diamonds and stars — the geometry of the alpana mandala, the circular floor drawing painted at the threshold for festivals in Bengal.
The base is woven or turned by local craftspeople, sealed and primed in a ground colour, and then painted freehand with a fine brush. The lotus, paisley (kolka), creeper and dot borders are drawn from memory, the way alpana has been drawn on Bengal’s courtyards for generations.
The paint is decorative and not food-safe. Keep the piece out of damp and direct sun, dust with a dry soft cloth and never wash it. Hang on a wall hook by the rim or handle, and store wrapped in cloth between ceremonies.
Painted to order in 1–2 weeks, then wrapped and boxed for shipping across India and worldwide.
