About this piece

A pedestal for celebrations

The white patterns on this stand come from alpana, the rice-paste drawings Bengali women make on floors and thresholds for festivals and pujas. A lotus-petal mandala sits at the centre of the top, and a running border of half-lotus arches, leaf sprays and dots wraps the rim and the pedestal. Raised on its foot, it makes a centrepiece for a birthday cake, Bijoya sweets, a platter of fruit, or a candle-and-flower arrangement.

The top and the pedestal are turned from seasoned mango wood, joined and sanded smooth. The rim and foot are painted red and the alpana is drawn over them freehand in white with a fine brush; the mandala is painted straight onto the bare wood of the top before the whole stand is sealed. Every line is drawn by hand, so the pattern varies slightly from piece to piece.

Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth and dry at once. Do not soak, wash under running water or put in a dishwasher. For cream cakes or cut fruit, place a cake board or doily on top, and keep out of long direct sunlight.
