About this gift

A bowl from the kitchen garden

Alpana is the auspicious white line Bengali women draw on courtyards and thresholds for Lakshmi puja and every festival. Here the same lotus, creeper and kolka (paisley) motifs are painted freehand onto turned and carved wood, so the blessing can sit on the table all year.

Inside: Hand-painted wooden salad bowl; Hamsa and paisley carved wooden tealight holders with tealights. Every piece is nested in crinkle paper inside a rigid Purva Heritage gift box, ready to hand over. The bowl is turned in wood and sealed, then the vegetables are painted on by hand with white folk flourishes on either side.

The painted surface is decorative: wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth and dry at once. Do not soak, put in a dishwasher or scrub the painted areas. Keep out of long direct sun. Never leave a lit tealight unattended; place the holders on a heat-safe surface.
