About this piece

A basket for every day

Sikki is a golden grass that grows wild in the ponds and marshy fields of Mithila, in north Bihar. Women of Madhubani and Sitamarhi have coiled it into boxes, baskets and toys for generations, and the craft is registered as a Geographical Indication, Sikki Grass Products of Bihar. This round basket with two looped handles is made to be used every day — fruit on the table, bread at breakfast, a potted plant, or a hamper base for festive gifting.

The Sikki stalks are cut, stripped of their flowering tips, sun-dried and split, and some are dyed in bright colours. A bundle of sturdier moonj grass is coiled from the centre and wrapped and stitched ring by ring with Sikki using a takua needle — the slanting stitches on the outside are the trace of that work. The two handles are coiled separately and stitched firmly into the rim. Because every ring is laid by hand, size and shade vary slightly from piece to piece.

Dust with a soft brush or wipe with a dry cloth. If the grass gets wet, dry it in the shade. Avoid long exposure to damp, which can cause spotting. Line with a napkin for bread or loose food.

Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then carefully packed and shipped across India and worldwide.
