The Mithila roti box
Sikki is a golden grass that grows wild in the ponds and marshy fields of Mithila, in north Bihar. Women of Madhubani and Sitamarhi have coiled it into boxes, baskets and toys for generations, and the craft is registered as a Geographical Indication, Sikki Grass Products of Bihar. Lidded Sikki boxes have a special place in Mithila homes — parents give their daughters a set of them, the pauti, when they marry. This roti box is coiled the same way: a deep base and a domed lid with a round knob that sits snugly on top, to keep rotis warm at the table or sweets and puja things together on the shelf.
The Sikki stalks are cut, stripped of their flowering tips, sun-dried and split, and some are dyed in bright colours. A bundle of sturdier moonj grass is coiled from the centre and wrapped and stitched ring by ring with Sikki using a takua needle — the slanting stitches on the outside are the trace of that work. The base and the lid are coiled as two separate pieces, and the knob is wound last and stitched to the centre of the lid. Because every ring is laid by hand, size and shade vary slightly from piece to piece.
Dust with a soft brush or wipe with a dry cloth. Line with a napkin before putting rotis or loose food inside, and do not wash in water. If the grass gets damp, dry it in the shade. Keep away from the stove flame.
