About this piece

The haat pakha

The haat pakha, the hand fan of woven bamboo, has cooled Bengal’s summers for centuries. Painted in alpana and edged in red frill, it is carried by the bride and given to guests at weddings and pujas, and is now just as often hung on the wall as a piece of folk art.

The base is woven or turned by local craftspeople, sealed and primed in a ground colour, and then painted freehand with a fine brush. The lotus, paisley (kolka), creeper and dot borders are drawn from memory, the way alpana has been drawn on Bengal’s courtyards for generations.

The paint is decorative and not food-safe. Keep the piece out of damp and direct sun, dust with a dry soft cloth and never wash it. Hang on a wall hook by the rim or handle, and store wrapped in cloth between ceremonies.
