About this piece

A tray with a secret

The white swirls on this tray come from alpana, the rice-paste drawings Bengali women make on floors and thresholds for festivals and pujas — a central paisley and flower spray, star-flowers in the corners and a running vine of lotus and leaves around the rim. Underneath, two drawers keep tea bags, napkins, spoons or sweets close at hand, so the tray works as a tea station, a dressing-table organiser or a puja thali stand.

The tray and its drawer chest are cut, joined and sanded from seasoned hardwood and given a warm brown finish. The motifs are then painted freehand in white with a fine brush and the whole piece is sealed. Because every line is drawn by hand, the painting varies slightly from piece to piece.

Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth and dry at once. Do not soak, wash under running water or put in a dishwasher. Use a coaster or cloth under very hot dishes.
