The elephant that keeps your treasures

In Indian homes the elephant stands for good fortune, wisdom and plenty — a trunk raised high is said to bring luck into the house. Here the elephant carries a little two-drawer chest on its back, ready to hold jewellery, keys, spices or puja odds and ends on a dresser or console.

The elephant and the box are cut and carved from seasoned mango wood, joined and sanded smooth. The pattern is then piped on freehand in thick white paint — sun-wheels on the lid, rows of hearts and diamonds on the drawers, vines down the legs — and set with small clear studs before a protective coat. Because every line is drawn by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike.

Dust with a dry soft cloth; do not wash or soak. Keep away from damp and long direct sunlight, which can dry out the wood. Lift from the body, not the trunk.
