About this piece

Alpana around the rim

The white motifs around this tray come from alpana, the rice-paste drawings Bengali women make on floors and thresholds for festivals and pujas — rising suns of petals, sprays of leaves, and a running border of crosses and crescents. Painted on a band of colour around the outside, they frame a plain wooden interior that shows off the grain. In festive red, it makes a natural thali for Durga Puja, Diwali or a wedding tattva.

The round tray is built from seasoned mango wood, sanded smooth and fitted with two curved black iron handles. A band of colour is laid around the outside, and the alpana motifs are painted over it freehand in white with a fine brush before the tray is sealed. Every line is drawn by hand, so the pattern varies slightly from piece to piece.

Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth and dry at once. Do not soak, wash under running water or put in a dishwasher. Use a coaster under hot cups and dishes, and keep out of long direct sunlight.

Made to order in 2–3 weeks, then wrapped, boxed and shipped across India and worldwide.
